Key Functions & Benefits
- Mechanism of Action: PNC-27 binds to HDM-2 (human double minute 2) protein, which is overexpressed in cancer cell membranes. This binding induces the formation of membrane pores, leading to rapid, non-apoptotic cell death (necrosis).
- Targeted Cancer Cells: It has shown effectiveness in killing various cancer cells, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and breast cancer cells, as well as in ex vivo studies of ovarian cancer.
- Specificity: Unlike many chemotherapeutic agents, PNC-27 does not kill normal, non-transformed cells, potentially offering a safer, less toxic, non-invasive therapeutic approach.
- Structure: It is a 32-residue peptide, combining a p53-derived tumor suppressor sequence with a cell-penetrating peptide (penetratin).
- Research Status: Primarily studied in pre-clinical research, including mouse models, demonstrating reduced AML engraftment and improved survival rates.
